TRU gets government approval for new graduate program to train nurse practitioners

Nurse practitioners at TRU

Thompson Rivers University’s School of Nursing has received government approval for a new graduate program to train nurse practitioners — something TRU’s president says will help “address the needs” of the Kamloops region.

Rani Srivastava, dean of TRU’s School of Nursing, announced approval for the program during Monday’s TRU senate meeting.

“We were very pleased to hear late Friday afternoon that our master’s of nursing nurse practitioner program has received approval and the minister’s signature,” she said.

“We have one remaining hurdle before we can really celebrate, and that is our regulatory body — so we’re waiting for them to review our program and we’re hoping that will happen sometime in the next six to eight weeks.”

TRU President Brett Fairbairn said the news is good for the university and for the community.

“It’s exciting to see programs that address the needs of our region as well as the strengths of our faculties,” he said.
