Kelowna's new millionaire

One of the big B.C. lotto winners this weekend lives right here in Kelowna.

Brittany Powell is now one million dollars richer after winning one of three MaxMillion prizes snagged in B.C. in last Friday’s Lotto Max draw.

“I am most excited and really confused,” laughed Powell, as she spoke to Castanet from the BCLC Kamloops office where she was collecting her cheque.

Powell has been playing the Lotto Max since she was 19 years old and now, at the age of 24, she is a millionaire.

She purchased her winning ticket in Cache Creek at the Copper Canyon Chevron, just days after terrible flooding hit the town.

A few days later, while driving through Vanderhoof, Powell decided to stop in at a gas station to fill up her truck, check her ticket and grab a drink.

“I checked my ticket and it made that fun sound,” says Powell. “It said ‘Congratulations you’ve won a major prize’.”

Her initial reaction was shock. She was sure the prize was along the lines of $50,000, not the one million dollars she quickly discovered it was worth.

“I was just thinking ‘Oh sweet, I can pay off my Jeep so easy’ and I was stoked and then I realized it was $1 million and it is just so much money,” says Powell.

“My two friends that were beside me just started laughing and I just didn’t have any words.”

She says her friends and family are finding it hard to believe.

“Nobody believes me, everyone thinks I am pulling their chain,” laughs Powell.

Powell says she knows she will use some of the money to pay off her Jeep and some debt, but is unclear about the rest.

She says she is still letting the news sink in, and plans to take off to get away from it all and decide what she is going to do with the cash.

“I am just going to think about what to do and eventually put it in the bank once I have an idea. I am going to go camping and hide from the world.”

She does admits her first purchase will be a meal and a beverage from her favourite pub.

As for work, she may take it easy this summer and work a little less than usual.

Powell is originally from Kamloops and moved to Kelowna this Spring.

Powell is the 5th MaxMillion winner in B.C. in the last 30 days. The next Lotto Max draw on June 5 is for $50 million jackpot plus 50 MaxMillions.
