Gun drawn in takedown

A 30-year-old foreign national is behind bars after a bizarre incident on Sunday left him bleeding, pepper sprayed and pinned to the ground.

Kelowna RCMP received a report of an assault at 9 a.m. and of a man bleeding from the head and acting erratically on Sunset Drive.

“Members attended and reported there was a bloody male seen running from the area,” said Cpl. Joe Duncan.

Six minutes later, a second call came int from a nearby residence, reporting the same man had broken into the home through a window.

Police arrived on scene as Abdulaziz Saud Alrawdhan was leaving the home.

Duncan says the man allegedly advanced on the officer in a threatening manner, and the officer had his gun drawn.

“The member drew his firearm and then put it away and pepper-sprayed the man,” said Duncan. “The man continued to advance on the officer, and there was a physical altercation.”

Once backup arrived, several officers subdued the man. He was put in restraints and paramedics were called.

Duncan said he continued to resist police and spat at paramedics as they strapped him to the gurney.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment before being put in police cells, awaiting a court appearance.

Police aren't certain what caused the man's behaviour.

Officers on the scene were able to interview and speak with a number of witnesses.

Alrawdhan, a Saudi Arabian citizen, was charged with one count of mischief $5,000 or under, two counts of break and enter to commit an indictable offence, two counts of assaulting a peace officer and two counts of assault.

Court records reveal Alrawdha is also already before the courts facing charges of assaulting a peace officer, mischief-obstruct the use/enjoyment of property and breach of conditions from an incident in July 2015.
