Hells Angel gets 18 years

A high-ranking member of the Hells Angels, and former vice-president of the Kelowna chapter, was sentenced to 18 years in prison Friday, the longest sentence a B.C. Hells Angel member has ever received.

David Giles, 66, was sentenced for conspiracy to import cocaine, conspiracy to traffic cocaine, and possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, after he was found guilty in September, according to an article published in the Vancouver Sun.

During meetings with undercover police in 2012, Giles and Kevin Van Kalkeren arranged the exchange of $4 million for the delivery of 200 kilograms of cocaine from South America.

Giles was given almost seven years credit for his time served prior to sentencing.

Van Kalkeren previously pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 16 years in jail.

Giles had applied to have his conviction thrown out due to the length of time it took to come to a conviction, but Justice Carol Ross dismissed his application in January, as she found the time taken to be justified.

Shawn Womacks, 45, was also convicted Friday for his part in the cocaine conspiracy. He was given a six-year sentence as he was hired only as labour for the operation.
