Murder victim ID'd

Kelowna RCMP have released the name of the man murdered on Queensway Avenue late on Canada Day.

The victim is 23-year-old Esa Carriere.

He recently moved to Kelowna from Mississauga, ON.

Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey says RCMP have released the name in order to further their investigation.

Police have also confirmed Carriere was stabbed.

“At this time our investigators consider the incident an isolated event,” said O’Donaghey.

Although the investigation is progressing, RCMP continue to urge witnesses to come forward with any and all information as police attempt to establish a time line for Carriere leading up to his death.

Police are also interested in collecting any videos or images taken before, during or following the incident.

RCMP were called shortly before 11 p.m. to the area behind a transit stop at the edge of city hall property.

Carriere was rushed to Kelowna General Hospital in grave condition. He died in hospital.

A pool of blood at the base of a tree on Queensway Avenue in downtown Kelowna is all that remains of a crime scene that left one man dead.

Police say the unidentified man in his 30's died in hospital from injuries suffered during an altercation on city hall grounds behind a transit stop.

The altercation took place close to 11 p.m. Sunday evening.

Police are asking anyone in the vicinity of the transit stop across from O’Flannigan’s Liquor Store to call 250-762-3300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The man's name has not been released.

Kelowna RCMP's Serious Crime Unit is investigating a Canada Day homicide.

Police are seeking witnesses after a male was fatally injured during an altercation near the Queensway Bus Loop about 10:50 p.m.

Officers found the man on the ground with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Kelowna General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

“Kelowna RCMP are looking to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of city hall on Queensway across from O’Flannigan’s Liquor Store between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.” says Const. Lesley Smith.

“The identity of the male victim is still unknown, and we are hoping to locate a friend or family member who will notify the RCMP should they recognize the following description.”

The victim is described as a non-white male in his thirties, about five feet 11 inches tall, 150 pounds, with long brown hair, long facial hair and brown eyes. The man was wearing black jeans, a rope belt and black shoes with white soles.  He also had several tattoos on his upper body, in particular a large colorful tattoo on his side.
