Victim always had a smile

Esa Carriere is being remembered as a hard-working young man who always had a smile on his face.

He was stabbed to death late Sunday night on Queensway Avenue just as the Canada Day fireworks were wrapping up in downtown Kelowna.

Carriere was from Mississauga, Ont. He relocated to Kelowna June 17, and got a job as a daytime cook at Kelly O'Bryan's restaurant.

"From the short time I knew him, he was just a genuinely nice person. Great attitude, always a smile on his face," said head chef Brandon Williams. "He was a hard-working kid. It is very shocking."

Carriere worked the day shift on Canada Day and was scheduled to work Monday morning.

Williams said the description police released didn't sound quite right, but it was kind of odd that he didn't show up for his shift Monday. A roommate of Carriere's informed the restaurant later in the day he was the victim.

Friends also took to Facebook to share their condolences.

"I can’t believe this happened to you. You were so excited to move out West and get your life started. You were a great guy and didn’t deserve this," Waise Sahel posted.

"Waking up to the news of your passing is so devastating, when a kind soul such as yourself has gone way too soon. Feels like yesterday we were just running into each other at EverAfter, vibing to the music and talking about your move to B.C. I’m going to miss you Esa Carriere. Rest In Peace, my friend," said Joey Delloro.

Carriere was also an accomplished artist.

Police have yet to make an arrest in the case, but say they do believe the incident to be random.

Anyone with video or images from before, during or after the incident is asked to contact Kelowna RCMP.
