You're landing where?

UPDATE:1:20 p.m.

Okanagan Ballooning reached out to Castanet to say the hot air balloon was theirs and that they didn't in fact land in a residential neighbourhood.

"We flew over Packers, but landed along Spiers Road in a farming area. We get airport permission every morning. We do try to land in fields more than residential areas, but it is wherever the wind takes you, said Joy Klempner with Okanagan Ballooning.

"A balloon is an incredibly safe way to travel, and there is a fear there because of a lack of understanding. We had a beautiful flight this morning over Kelowna. We have flown in area for 20 years so we know the area very well," Klempner added.

Okanagan Ballooning says the pilot can control height within an inch so they don’t ever come down on a roof.

It's not a sight you see everyday, a hot air balloon floating above your home looking for a place to land, but according Kelowna resident Bruce Hedmann this isn't the first time he has seen it.

The balloon was spotted looking to land along Packers Road in Kelowna just after 8 a.m. Monday morning.

"A couple of years ago we had him floating down into our neighbourhood. I still question how this person can be landing their hot air baloon in a residential neighbourhood. I looks like he is going to land on someone's house, very dangerous," Hedmann said.

The owner of the hot-air balloon contacted Castanet a couple of years back when the incident occurred.

"I remember when he talked to Castanet years back he said it's very safe. We have a chase car that is close at hand,"Hedmann added.

The concerned resident said he looked into proper protocol when it happened years ago.

"There is no safety piece with the aviation authorities in Kelowna that say you can't do this or can't do that. It's because it's a hot air balloon he is not under power. He goes wherever the wind takes him," Hedmann added.

If you recognize the balloon or know the owner, send us an email to [email protected].
