Alert issued in Lake Country after bears spotted on Rail Trail

Bears spotted on Rail Trail

The District of Lake Country has issued a warning to residents after a momma bear and her three cubs were spotted on the Okanagan Rail Trail.

The district says the four bears were seen around the 22-kilometre spot on the popular trail on Monday morning.

"Walking back and forth between the orchards and Wood Lake," wrote the district on their Facebook Page.

Lake Country is reminding the public to be aware of their surroundings and not to use headphones when hiking, biking or running in bear country.

"Be cautious around running water, thick brush or high wind that may mask your presence. Bear bells are not recommended as the high-pitched tinkle does not travel as far and is not recognized as a human."

WildSafeBC also says to keep your pets on a leash as 50 per cent of black bear attacks resulting in human injuries involved dogs as they may be perceived as a potential threat or prey.
