Kelowna woman 'shaken up' after rock was thrown at her car

Thrown rock smashes car

A Kelowna resident is still shaken up after her car was struck with a baseball-sized rock as she was driving with her two young children on Gordon Drive in Upper Mission on Saturday afternoon.

Charolette, who wishes to only share her first name says she was going downhill around the bend and saw out of the corner of her eye a baseball-sized rock coming towards her.

“[it was] being lobbed from down below and up and over, hit my hood then hit my windshield and smashed it, to the point where actually there was glass on the inside of my car.”

The mother was driving at around 4:15 p.m. on July 4 with her five-month-old and a two and a half-year-old in the car and says she was lucky there was no-one behind me at the time.

“I’m lucky that it hit off to the side and it hit part of my frame, also hitting the hood I think slowed it down a little bit, but I really think it’s unfortunate these people decided to do that and cause not only the damage to my car but a little bit of scariness.”

“Throwing a baseball-sized rock at someone that’s driving down a hill that’s 50 or 60 km/h, at that speed with that size of a rock, definitely if it had have hit the middle of my windshield I think my whole windshield would have been gone.”

She then pulled over and called the Kelowna RCMP who came to the scene to investigate the situation and help the visibly shaken up resident.

“He went up to remove the rock from the road and he said there were multiple rocks of similar size, maybe not as big as the one that hit my car, but similar, meaning that they’ve done it multiple times and they continue to do it.”

Charolette could not believe how dangerous the situation was and hopes telling her story will make the culprits stop putting other’s lives at risk.

“It could have killed us, it could have hit my passenger side window where my child was sitting and I just really think they hopefully see this and understand what they’ve potentially caused.”

She says she was too shaken up to look over the bend to see who or how many people were throwing rocks.

“I didn’t want to pull over and try to investigate who’s throwing the giant rock at me, what are they potentially going to do to me again, especially when I have children in my car I did not really want to get out of my vehicle to go and look.”

Nothing like this has happened to Charolette who isn’t from the area but shared her story with residents of Upper Mission who say they’re now worried about driving down the hill.

All three members of the vehicle were not injured and when talking about her oldest, she says she was extremely proud of her son.

“I was bawling my eyes out and he was just like ‘someone hit our car with a rock mommy’ like he was a matter of fact, like what happened? It was so huge, a kid couldn’t miss it, so he was actually extremely good about it and very calm.”

She wanted to thank the officers involved from the dispatcher to the one that was on the scene for making her and her family feel safe.

“The RCMP was so nice to [my son], they gave him stickers and tried to make light of the moment because kids can get really stressed in those situations and he was actually really good so I was lucky.”

Charolette, who is certain that it was kids throwing the rocks is just disappointed that they would think this is funny in any way.

“They have to understand they were someone’s babies at one point too and they still are someone’s babies, just in a different way, and what if that had have happened to their family and what it could have potentially caused? I just hope it’s some type of awakening for them.”
