AdventureSmart shares ways to explore safely this long weekend

Being adventure smart

With the BC Day long weekend here, BC AdventureSmart is sharing some useful tips on how to stay safe.

If you're planning to go on an adventure, you should research where you're going, create a plan, ensure you're physically and mentally fit, take the essentials along with extra gear and call 911 if you need help.

When heading outdoors for a fun adventure a turn in the weather, misjudgment, an injury, equipment failure or sudden nightfall could turn your trip into a crisis. Be sure to let someone know where you're going and when you're expected to return.

Be sure to complete a trip plan. This details your destination, travel route, equipment and expected time of return. This is vital information that can be used to help authorities find you in case of an emergency.

If nobody is aware that you are missing, nobody will be looking for you.

Consider downloading the AdventureSmart Trip Plan app to assist you in creating a trip plan that you can send directly to your family and friends. It is available on all Apple iOS and Google Play Android devices and web browsers.

When planning your trip, you may want to consider having a phone that works within the area in case of an emergency. A successful outcome can depend on how soon a call is made.

You should also aware of the capabilities and limitations of your equipment.
