BC Wildfire Service reports fire near Little White Mountain

Little White fire at 15 ha.

UPDATE 3:40 p.m.

The wildfire burning east of Kelowna Wednesday has grown to 15 hectares in size throughout the day.

Air tankers spent the afternoon dropping retardant lines on the Little White Mountain fire, and two helicopters remain on site, assisting 18 BC Wildfire Service firefighters.

The fire, which is believed to have been sparked by lightning Tuesday, remains classified as "out of control," but no buildings are in the area.

UPDATE 10:39 a.m.

BC Wildfire Service tells Castanet that visibility has improved enough for one helicopter to get airborne to assist with fighting the Little White Mountain fire.

"Due to improved visibility we have one helicopter responding to support ground crews," says BC Wildfire Services, Taylor McDonald.

ORIGINAL 9:25 a.m.

BC Wildfire Service crews tell Castanet heavy smoke in the region is hampering their ability to fight a fire that has broken out 25 kilometres southeast of Kelowna, just outside Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park.

According to Taylor McDonald with the BC Wildfire Service, the fire is believed to have been caused by lightning.

Poor visibility in the region is preventing aircraft from accessing the fire so ground crews have been dispatched. The initial crew should be on scene Wednesday morning with 12 more members expected to arrive on scene later today.

The fire was initially reported to be three hectares in size and it did not grow overnight.
