A resident at the Mountainview Village care home has died after contracting COVID-19

COVID claims Kelowna life

A resident at the Mountainview Village care home in Kelowna has died from COVID-19.

The patient was a man in his 80s.

He was the first resident of a care home within the Interior Health region to test positive for the virus.

“We offer our condolences to the family and caregivers during this difficult time. Interior Health will continue working closely with Mountainview’s administration and staff as we combat COVID-19 together," said IH president and CEO Susan Brown.

“We all have a role to play to stop the spread in our communities, and I’m asking everyone to stick close to home right now and keep to your household. Limiting spread in our communities will help keep COVID-19 out of our long-term care facilities and help protect our most vulnerable.”

This is the fourth death reported within Interior Health since the pandemic started.

IH says a second staff member at Mountainview Village, linked to the first two cases at the home, has now tested positive.

IH says the individual worked for a "short time on the first floor," therefore, as a precaution, Interior Health is expanding the outbreak to include the first floor of the building.

In its daily update, Interior Health says an additional 82 new cases have been reported over the past 24 hours, for a total of 1.981.

Of those, 609 are active and in isolation. Sixteen people are in hospital, with four still in intensive care.
