Kelowna musician DLopez is getting ready to drop his new album, written over the past year during a time when his family was suffering.
"It's been really really sad," DLopez tells Castanet.
Both his grandmother and uncle died from COVID-19 in Mexico. His mother, a Canadian nurse, travelled to the country to spend her final days with her brother and mother.
His album, “Fallen With Broken Wings,” touches on his struggle with depression and facing tough times – something that resonates with the entire world right now.
"The mantra for it is 'freedom is in the mind' and also 'it's okay not to be okay' and I think a lot of people need to hear that right now," says DLopez.
For most music artists, recording and performing can be a form of therapy during tough times, but because of the pandemic they don't have the same outlets that they used to.
Many artists, like DLopez have gone virtual. He will perform his new songs at a big live stream concert on February 27 as part of the 'Live at the KCT' series being put on and streamed by RebelliousUnicorns.
He hopes his art will help others to heal during these difficult times.
"Blinded is a very personal track. It basically touches a bit on the COVID," DLopez explains.
"That is what music is, it's so powerful. That's why it is healing, it is medicine. That vibration is actual medicine," says DLopez.
