Oyama photographer captures spectacular photos of Aurora borealis

Northern lights over Oyama

The northern lights made a rare appearance above the Okanagan early Saturday morning, and one Oyama photographer captured some breathtaking photos.

Nick Clements monitors several Northern Canadian photography Facebook pages to get an idea of when the phenomena is strong enough to make its way to the Okanagan. And Friday night, he stayed up late and was rewarded handsomely for his efforts.

Some of the spectacular shots of the Aurora borealis were taken from his home in Oyama while others were taken from the Pelmewash Parkway.

Clements says he's captured the northern lights from his Oyama home in the past, but he says they're only strong enough to see this far south a handful of times in a year. And then clouds can also obscure the views.

But the conditions worked out perfectly early Saturday morning and Clements was able to snap a number of photos between 1 and 3 a.m. For those who want to see them in person, he says they may make another appearance Saturday night.

Check out the gallery above to see Clement's recent photos, along with a couple of his others from 2015.
