Transmission of COVID-19 in Rutland slowing, still highest in region

Rutland transmission slows

New COVID-19 cases in the Rutland area have finally started to decrease, but the community still has the highest rate of transmission in the Thompson-Okanagan.

New community-level COVID-19 data released by the BC Centre for Disease Control this week shows between May 25 and 31, Rutland had a daily infection rate of 19 new cases per 100,000 people, a 40 per cent decrease from the week prior.

But transmission in Rutland remains among some of the highest rates in the province. The only two regions in the Lower Mainland with similarly high transmission rates are North Surrey, at 20 daily infections per 100,000 people, and Northeast False Creek, with 19 daily infections per 100,000 people.

Meanwhile, small population communities in the northeast of the province continue to have relatively high daily transmission rates – 25 per 100,000 in the Fort Nelson local health area, and 18 in the Peace River North local health area.

After labelling Rutland a “high-transmission community” last month, and hosting targeted walk-up vaccination clinics, immunization rates have increased in recent weeks, to 55 per cent of those 12 and older. Although the community still lags behind much of the rest of the Thompson-Okanagan.

The Vernon Centre/Coldstream area also saw relatively high transmission last week, at 11 daily infections per 100,000 people, but most of the region has seen transmission drop as vaccinations continue across the province.

Downtown Kelowna recorded eight daily infections per 100,000 people, while the Okanagan-Mission had six. Case rates were lowest in the South Okanagan, while Kamloops Centre North and Kamloops Centre South recorded rates of just three and two daily infections per 100,000 people respectively.

As of Wednesday, 68 per cent of all British Columbians 12 and older had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Most of the Thompson-Okanagan communities are lagging behind the provincial average slightly, with only Summerland (72 per cent), Penticton (70 per cent) and Kamloops Centre South (70 per cent) exceeding it. The Enderby area currently has the lowest 12+ vaccination rate, at 53 per cent.
