Kelowna Cabs and the union representing company dispatchers have reached a tentative agreement

Deal reached in taxi war

There could be labour peace within a segment of the Kelowna taxi industry.

MoveUP, the union representing locked out Kelowna Cabs dispatchers, says a tentative memorandum of understanding was reached between the two parties Tuesday.

BC Labour Relations Board vice-chair Brett Matthews helped facilitate the agreement.

The five affected dispatchers are scheduled to meet later today to discuss the agreement before holding a ratification vote.

If ratified, the MOU would become a collective agreement, binding on both sides.

Under provisions of the agreement, Kelowna Cabs would end the lockout, the union would withdraw unfair labour complaints against the company and the decertification application of certain employees will be withdrawn.

Each of the five members would also receive a $250 signing bonus.

The dispute between Kelowna Cabs and its dispatchers stems from the companies attempts to eliminate the dispatch positions in favour of an app-based system.

The new agreement does not preclude the company from using technology or an outside call centre to assist with the dispatching of calls, however, it states that technology cannot result in a reduction of the bargaining unit work.

The three-year contract is retroactive to June 1, 2019, and is set to expire May 31 of next year.
