Landslide behind home in Mission

Landslide in Mission

A big chunk of a backyard came tumbling down onto the road below in Upper Mission Wednesday afternoon.

The home is on Clarance Avenue, and the landslide partially covered Lakecrest Court.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. said Catherine Woodyard.

“I was backing up into my driveway and directly across the street from me, all of a sudden I saw a family’s backyard just slide down the hill and completely cover the street,” said Woodyard.

She just moved to Kelowna and was stunned to see a landslide right in front of her.

“I didn’t know what to do, so I called the police because I thought somebody should know, and they sent the city out.”

Woodyard said the sprinklers had been on at the property for quite a while, but there has also been blasting in the area, and at times she has felt her house shake.

A City of Kelowna employee guarding the scene said a couple of people, believed to be tenants, were in the house when the slide happened, and the homeowner has been alerted.

Part of Lakecrest Ct. was blocked by the slide but some people were able to walk past the scene to get to their homes.
