Kelowna's Tree of Hope to be lit tonight, live streamed on Castanet

Tree of Hope lit tonight

It is the unofficial start of the holiday season in Kelowna.

The iconic Tree of Hope at the Landmark District will be lit this evening, an event that will be live streamed on Castanet.

Things will get underway at roughly 4:40 p.m. with introductions in advance of the actual light-up at 5:15 p.m.

The event at the base of the tree is not open to the public due to pandemic restrictions, but will be streamed live here on Castanet. Anyone in the neighbourhood is also welcome to watch the big moment from the surrounding area as well. Dilworth Mountain and the Parkinson Rec Centre are suggested.

This year’s beneficiaries of the Raising Hope campaign are Karis Support Society and NOW Canada. Both organizations have the common goal of raising up the vulnerable women and their children in our community.

The local non-profits help women transition from a life of addiction, abuse, exploitation, and mental health challenges to a life in recovery and independence. In the past year, working together, they served 243 women in their recovery and affordable housing programs, this impacted approximately 83 children and babies. NOW Canada was able to offer 4,743 “bed nights” to women staying in the low-barrier shelter and a harm reduction program to 417 clients staying in the shelter.

The Stober Family Foundation will be matching all donations raised between now and Christmas day up to $100,000," said Dallas Gray, Landmark District marketing agent, on AM1150's Early Edition on Wednesday morning. "So really, this is the time to give to those charities as the donations will double."

"The Tree of Hope Raising Hope campaign is really designed to shine the light on complex social issues in our community. We believe that raising awareness is just as important as raising the funds and using the tree's profile initiates conversation. And really, it's a great way to do that," Gray continued.

Donations to the 24th Raising Hope campaign can be made at treeofhopekelowna.ca.
