A nine-foot Menorah will light up Kelowna tonight, as Part of the World’s Largest Hanukkah Observance

Lighting up the menorah

A nine-foot Hanukkah menorah is soon to be lit at Stuart Park across from City Hall.

The light-up will take place at 5 p.m. followed by a community-wide celebration.

Today is the first night of the eight-day holiday.

The ceremony, organized by Chabad-Lubavitch Okanagan director Rabbi Shmuly Hecht, will feature city officials, guests and friends. Following the menorah lighting ceremony, there will be live music traditional Latkas, Sufganiyot and more.

“The message of Hanukkah is the message of ever-increasing light and hope even during times of great darkness,” said Rabbi Hecht.

“The menorah serves as a symbol of Kelowna's dedication to preserve and encourage the right and liberty of all its citizens to worship God freely, openly, and with pride, and to bring ever-increasing awareness of our little spark of Divine light that when ignited, can dispel much inner and outer darkness."

The Menorah lighting is part of the worldwide Hanukkah campaign, an initiative launched by the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, in 1973.

The Okanagan Chabad House will be presenting SCORES of Hanukkah events and celebrations, including public Menorah Lightings and celebrations in Vernon, Salmon Arm, Blind Bay, Penticton, Peachland and more as part of the annual Chabad Okanagan Chanukah Tour across the Valley.
