Kelowna nurse suspended for checking health records of woman she was considering hiring as a nanny

Nosy nurse suspended

A registered nurse in Kelowna has been suspended for three weeks for accessing the health records of a person she was considering hiring as a nanny.

The BC College of Nurses and Midwives announced this week it had reached an agreement with Megan Angel Munoz of Kelowna over “practice issues” that occurred in July and August 2021.

The notice from the college states Angel Munoz violated privacy legislation when she “accessed the personal health records of two individuals with whom she had no therapeutic relationship without their knowledge or consent, for the sole purpose of obtaining their health information to inform an employment decision regarding hiring one of the individuals as a nanny.”

The notice is vague as to why Angel Munoz checked the second person’s records, only saying it was “for clinical practice concerns identified while orientating to public health practice.”

As a result, Angel Munoz agreed to a three-week suspensions, education in professional ethics and boundaries and a regulatory practice consultation program.

The College of Nurses and Midwives does not release additional details of consent agreements with members.
