A makeshift memorial has been erected on Highway 97 at the spot where Tavin Hansom, 18, lost his life last week in a motorcycle crash.

Hansom’s motorcycle collided with a pickup truck just before 4 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Highway 97 and Old Vernon Road.

Tavin’s father, Jim, tells Castanet a couple travelling behind the motorcycle stopped after the collision and stayed with him while he passed.

“I was worried about what they might say, but it made me feel better big time. In my mind, there was a light switch. It wasn't a fade away,” Hansom said, explaining the couple said Tavin was not conscious and seemed at peace, comforting words for the father, family and friends.

Candice Moth is helping the family through a difficult time, “it's helped all of us 100% because we know he didn't suffer, we knew it was instant. We know that he didn't feel any pain and that helps us all a little bit.”

Hansom is still struggling but says he and the rest of the family have been touched and encouraged by the outpouring of support, “we as the family appreciate all the condolences all the heartfelt, everything everybody's done for us. It's wonderful. We have a wonderful community here in the Okanagan, and we appreciate what everybody's done for us.”

The family are planning a private cremation and service but also want to give those who knew Tavin and who have reached out the opportunity to express their grief.

“We’re not sure exactly what or where. I was thinking in a park or something. Somewhere that can accommodate a large group of people. But I just want something simple, where they can come and see a picture of him and they can say a few words,” said Hansom.

The family is asking anyone who can help with the memorial service or who has a small public address microphone and speaker to please reach out to Candice Moth by email.

“If everybody shows up that is affected, it's gonna (be big), it needs to be a park or something like that,” said Hansom.
