Don't fall for scams over the phone.
According to Cobs Bread on Spall Road, phone scammers are targeting businesses by claiming they are with BC Hydro.
The bakery tells Castanet they received a call from someone telling them their power was being shut off within the hour for outstanding bills.
Cobs Bread called the number provided where they asked for credit card information for payment. When they noted that they don't even have a BC Hydro account for the bakery, they were directed to another line and put on a continuous ringing loop.
"Scammers are always finding new ways to try to trick our customers, from knocking on their doors to try to gain entry to homes, to sending emails pretending to be a representative from BC Hydro," said BC Hydro online.
People are asked to report any fraudulent texts or emails they receive to their local police department and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1 888 495 8501.
If you're ever unsure about whether a communication from BC Hydro is legitimate, don't click any links or open any files sent to you. Call the utility's customer team at 1 800 BC HYDRO (1 800 224 9376) for clarification.
