Coyote breeding season gets underway in the Okanagan

You might hear the coyotes yipping more often in the coming weeks.

The breeding season is underway across the Okanagan, and reports of conflicts between the animals and humans can increase this time of year, according to WildSafeBC.

“They’re on the move. They’re looking for mates. They will yip and howl to communicate with each other, “ says Kathy Murray, WildSafeBC provincial support officer.

She suggests you be extra cautious when out for a walk, especially with your pets.

“Being aware of your surroundings, making noise, travelling during daylight, carry a stick or bear spray. Keep your pets under control. Either under vocal control or ideally on a leash. Don’t let them chase wildlife.”

Murray says that if you encounter an aggressive coyote, make yourself appear large, maintain eye contact and never run or turn your back because it could trigger an attack.

“If you have small pets or children, pick them up and gather as a group. Wave your arms. If you have a walking stick, be prepared to use it as a weapon.

“With coyotes, you can throw rocks or sticks or other objects in the animals' vicinity,” she adds.

Murray reminds people that encounters with aggressive wildlife or animals that fail to show fear towards humans should be reported to the BC Conservation Officer Service.
