Canadian Tire plans to spend $25 million on its new Kelowna store

$25M for new Canadian Tire

A week after it was learned Canadian Tire has plans to relocate to the former Kelowna Costco site, the company is providing some specific details about the project.

In an email responding to specific questions pertaining to its relocation plans, the company says it wants to build a brand new store on the former Costco site at highways 97 and 33.

"The proposed store will be a new building that will replace the existing building on the property," a statement attributed to the Canadian Tire Corporation says.

"It will have our latest in-store technology and more than double our selling space at the current location from just over 51,000 square feet today to 108,000 square feet.

"Canadian Tire will invest an estimated $25 million in the project, creating 150 to 175 construction jobs."

According to the email the Kelowna relocation is part of a $1.2 billion investment in the company's store network.

It will include an expansion of product categories and assortment, and an enhanced "omnichannel" experience.

The development permit application must still go through an internal process at city hall before it reaches the council table for discussion.
