Okanagan restaurants preparing for busy Valentine's Day

A Valentine's for everyone

Restaurants in the Okanagan are gearing up for one of their busiest days of the year, Valentine's Day.

The BC Restaurant and Food Association says its members are expecting a big day with plenty of pent-up demand still flowing after the pandemic.

"They’re still spending," said association president Ian Tostenson.

"They might be changing their menu habits a bit, maybe doing more shared plates or maybe appetizers instead of full meals or taking advantage of happy hours. But the good news is they’re going out and as long as they’re going out we can make that a good experience for them."

But with inflation squeezing everyone's wallets, some are staying in.

"100 per cent a night in. You can just have more fun, you know? Get take out, eat in, watch your favourite movie. It doesn’t have to be some big, huge, fancy dinner out," said a Kelowna resident walking downtown.

“I’m night in,” added another downtown pedestrian. “I’d rather spend the money on buying a good steak and good food and eating it in and hanging out. I’ve always been a homebody."

Whether you’re in a relationship, single or you just had your heart broken, Jack’s on Bernard has a little something for everyone with their third annual Break Up Bar.

"This time of year can be tricky for people. It can be very lonely," said Jack’s on Bernard general manager Angelique Viera.

"We really wanted to create an experience where whether or not you are happy in a relationship or you’re happy on your own, or you are experiencing some sort of sadness, you can come here and it’s an equal playing field."

Valentine’s Day lands on Tuesday, so if you’re planning on taking your loved one out for a night on the town, you might want to consider getting on top of a reservation before it’s too late.
