They'll figure it out

Re: Prove it

What a great letter. Well written and thought provoking and I think it touches the heart of the matter with respect to "why us and not them".

Restaurants are not deemed essential is the simple answer. It's not a good answer but it is simple.

Many restaurants in our fair town are owned and operated by individuals who have poured their lives into creating a business that they can be proud of and these people, because of the stakes, are the ones who are much more likely to take the necessary steps to ensure that they are keeping everybody safe.

On to the "essential" businesses.

We all know who she is talking about as she muses the whys and the seeming hypocrisy of the retail outlets and the health directives. These stores will tell you that they take all of the necessary measures as directed by our health officials, but do they really?

Take a look around next time you're shopping. People wearing masks? For the most part, check.

Social distancing? Not really. Some do but most are focused on their task at hand and want to get out and get home and if you are standing between them and the limes, they're reaching over you.

Respect for others by not handling every apple or orange or package on the shelf? Nope. Everything gets touched eventually and yes, we do go home and put them in our pantries and in our mouths.

The reason your restaurant has been asked to close again Laura is that someone in an office somewhere sat with a group of their peers and asked the question, "What criteria do we use to determine which businesses close and which can stay open? we need something simple so the masses understand".

"How about classifying them as being essential and non-essential"?

"Pretty broad stroke but OK. We're going to get backlash from restaurants and churches but hey, do you really need to eat out or pray? We're in a pandemic after all".

"But the big box stores attract much bigger crowds and there really isn't any way to control how many come in or how they act when they're shopping. Isn't that kind of a recipe for disaster"?

"Probably but people need to eat and buy sinks".

"What about air travel"?

"Not sure how we determine who is going to Mexico for a tan and who is going to Mexico for business. I think it's better to just let that go for now. What could possibly go wrong"?

"But let's keep the border closed except for trucking companies".

"If all of the restaurants are closed and washrooms are closed, what do they do"?

"They'll figure it out".

"Alright, who's up for Chinese"?

"Ummm, maybe we need to rethink this".
