Don't judge other parents

Re: Robert Hepting’s letter, Shrill toddler in restaurant (Castanet, Oct. 25)

This is for Mr. Robert Hepting, who felt the need to shame some parents that likely needed a night out—even if that meant bringing their child along.

Mr. Hepting, did you consider that perhaps these parents had tried to find a sitter and were unable? Perhaps their sitter backed out at the last minute and they still wanted to have that night out. Maybe this was their first time out in months. COVID has certainly kept many of us away from restaurants.

Mr. Hepting, have you ever tried to tell a one-year-old not to shriek? Not to yell? Most children respond by doing it more because it's fun to them. But no, I imagine your own children were so perfect that they didn't dare make any sound in a restaurant, or you didn't bring them into a restaurant because your plans never fell through, especially not at the last minute.

Perhaps you should look within yourself and realize that you shamed some parents that wanted to splurge on an occasional treat.

Instead of rushing to judgement, put yourself in that couple's shoes. Raising a child is hard enough without people like you making them feel worse.

I hope you take the time to really think about what is important in life and what is worth focusing on and stop judging people for things that quite frankly, do not concern you.

E. Harggam
