Trees before housing wrong

I was at the (Kelowna city) council meeting and public hearing earlier this week and a councillor used his time in chambers to tell a lobby group he was on board with them‚ three times. I was disgusted.

Coun. Charlie Hodge used three different opportunities to tell tree protectors from the May 10 council meeting that he was on their side. He even asked why there were no trees on a property that fire destroyed.

He said he will consider voting no on every housing project (to support) “our young people.” I hate to break it to Hodge but young people need a place to live. Holding developers to account is great and necessary but refusing to build at all is ridiculous.

For a city that claims to be all about fairness and being equitable, it strikes me that anyone who doesn't already have a seat on council doesn't have a fair shot of winning a seat if sitting councillors use their time in chambers to signal support for lobby groups. It seems rather unethical to me.

It seems like they are trying to save themselves instead of running the city.
