Boat flips and sinks

An Okanagan boat owner had to abandon ship after a late night boating mishap on Sunday near the dog beach in Peachland.

RCMP Cst. Kris Clark says the boat owner and a friend were on-board when the accident happened.

“Apparently the two occupants were coming into dock, near Princeton Avenue, and hit a rock causing extensive damage to the hull,” says Clark.

The two people were able to get off the boat just before it took on water and flipped. They called the RCMP for help.

“We located the boat overturned and deemed it to be an environmental or safety hazard. So, we towed it to shore where it could be removed the following afternoon,” says Clark.

He says a risk assessment was done and although the boat was not leaking any fuel it needed to be moved to ensure another boat did not strike it and cause further damage.

Clark says there is no indication there was alcohol or impaired driving involved.

Michael Owen lives in Peachland and was there the next day watching the boat get retrieved from the lake.

He says in the afternoon a crane was brought in to roll-over the 26-foot powerboat and get it out of the water.

Apparently the boat was so water logged the recovery crew had to ax the bottom of the boat to release the rest of the water.

The Peachland Fire Department was on scene as a precautionary measure with booms and oil absorbent pads in case there was a spill during the recovery.

Owen says he has noticed the water is very low right now; he believes it is two-feet lower than it was in mid summer.
