A 47-year-old Penticton man is dead after he was struck by a semi tractor-trailer on Highway 97 six kilometres north of Penticton.

According to police, the unidentified man ran across the highway and in front of the semi about 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

The front end of the semi truck struck the pedestrian.

Police say part of the investigation will be attempting to discover why the man ran across the highway in front of the semi.

A serious accident has traffic slowed to halt on Highway 97 just north of Penticton.

According to DriveBC, the incident happened six kilometres north of Penticton, early this morning.

The highway is reportedly not closed entirely, but lane closures are in affect and traffic is backed up considerably.

A caller to the newsroom said traffic is backed up in both directions as far as he can see.
