New SPCA Shelter Opens

Home sweet home.

The new South Okanagan-Similkameen Community Animal Shelter official opened its doors Monday.

Branch Manager, Tracey Westmoreland, spent the weekend moving the animals into their new home.

“It took a lot of effort from a lot of people, but we got everyone moved in,” says Westmoreland.

She says the SPCA has also reached the fund raising goal of $1.55 million.

“We will also be receiving an anonymous donation from a woman in the Lower Main Land, who promised to donated $100,000 if we met our goal,” says Westmoreland.

She says while the grand-opening of the new state-of-the-art facility won't take place until sometime next year, Monday is the first day of business for the shelter.

“We have our printer working, our computers almost working and the doors are open,” says Westmoreland.

The shelter is located behind the old SPCA building on Dartmouth Road and will operate during the old shelter hours, Monday to Friday from noon until 5 p.m.
