Penticton city councillor and former mayor stable in hospital after suffering a stroke

Kimberley stable from stroke

It will be a long road to recovery but Penticton city councillor Jake Kimberley is making progress after suffering a stroke earlier this month, according to his son Sean.

“He is stable in hospital and going through the usual care for a stroke patient. It’s going to be a long recovery as it stands now,” said Sean on Sunday. “He is aware of what’s happening, and still has his humour.”

On Canada Day, Jake, 80, suffered a stroke while at home. He was taken to Penticton Regional Hospital where he is currently.

However, his family has not been able to see him in person.

“With the Coronavirus protocols at [Penticton Regional Hospital], no one including me has been able to visit,” said Sean.

Jake Kimberley served as mayor of Penticton three times over 30 years, best known for bringing the South Okanagan Events Centre into fruition during his last term. He also vehemently opposed the Skaha Lake waterslides proposal.

He came out of retirement in 2018 and ran for city council, topping the polls.

At a recent Penticton city council meeting, mayor John Vassilaki offered his best wishes to his friend and colleague.

“I’d like to wish Jake the best for a fast recovery and we are all praying for him,” said Vassilaki.
