Penticton addiction recovery centre starts an overdose and suicide support group

Overdose support group

As multiple cities throughout BC see paramedics responding to more overdose calls than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic, a grief support group has started as a resource to those who have lost a loved one to overdose or suicide for those affected in Penticton.

There were a total of 27,067 emergency calls for overdose in 2020, up 12 per cent when compared with 2019.

Penticton had 474 overdose calls in 2020 alone, up 87 per cent over the previous year.

The South Okanagan Loss Society and Pathways Addiction Resource Centre want to help provide tools for those going through this grief. The organization is hosting a six-part series to help people "be directed through a process that we hope will help you manage this “Life transition.’”

The series started on Jan. 20 and will also be held on Jan. 27, Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 10 a.m. to noon at Pathways Addictions Resource Centre.

The group is facilitated by Sam Lucier and Dorothy Point of the South Okanagan Loss Society.

Pre-registration for the support group is required and attendance is limited. For more information, contact the centre by calling 250-492-0400 or sending an email to [email protected]
