NDP MP Richard Cannings nominated for South Okanagan - West Kootenay riding again

Cannings chosen again

NDP members in the South Okanagan - West Kootenay riding have chosen Richard Cannings to represent them once again, in the next Federal election.

Cannings was nominated during Sunday’s virtual meeting and he was uncontested.

“It is truly an honour to be asked to represent the best part of Canada once again, and I am keen to keep working hard for our area”, he said.

A Federal election is not scheduled until October, however president of the local NDP Electoral District Association Andrina Calvert says, “If Prime Minister Trudeau calls a snap election this spring, we are ready and Richard’s name will be on the ballot.”

Cannings won the riding in 2015 and 2019. He also won Penticton Now’s 2020 Best of Penticton Awards in the Best Elected Official category as well as the Forest Product Association of Canada’s Community Champion Award in 2018.
“I’m proud of the supports we’ve fought hard for and achieved for Canadians struggling during the pandemic” said Cannings, referring to the 75 per cent wage subsidy, paid sick days, extension of CERB, rental assistance for small businesses, and support for students, seniors and people living with disabilities.

“We’re getting things done but there is so much more to do – we’re focused on ramping up the pressure to deliver on pharmacare, dental care and real progress against the climate crisis.”

During Sunday’s meeting, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh had some kind words for Cannings.

“When you send New Democrats like Richard to Ottawa, you get results,” he said.

Cannings is the first candidate in the South Okanagan - West Kootenay riding to be confirmed.
