A total of 78 pigs were forced to evacuate from their home in Oliver last Monday

Sanctuary evacuates 78 pigs

It’s been one week since the Nk’Mip Creek Wildfire forced the evacuation of Little Oink Bank Pig Sanctuary in Oliver.

Co-founder Carrie Shogan says the past week has been extremely intense.

“We had about 10 minutes to clear out when the order came in on Monday night.”

The non-for-profit says all 78 animals were evacuated over the span of three days with help from the Animal Lifeline Emergency Response Team.

“Unfortunately policy and procedure is all well and good on paper and then enacting it we found a number of issues that we were able to learn from and we are so grateful we had the opportunity and a couple of days to get them out.”

Shogan says if they are looking at infrastructure changes in case they are faced with another evacuation order.

“Pigs are prey animals so they have a lot of fear. They are large and strong and faster than you can imagine. So it is making sure we can get it as streamlined and quick and as efficient as possible."

The pigs are currently located in Osoyoos, but Shogan says their exact location can’t be specified due to the nature of how some of them were surrendered.

For anyone with multiple animals on a property, Shogan recommends doing a few practise runs with the animals so you are ready in case there is a real emergency.
