As Penticton City Council calls for more police, Castanet hit the streets to ask people how safe they feel and if more RCMP are the needed

More RCMP for the city?

Casey Richardson

Penticton was the most dangerous city in the Okanagan for 2020, according to recent data from Statistics Canada showing a crime severity index of 180.

In comparison, BC’s crime severity index sits at 95, while Vernon has a score of 147, Kelowna at 130, West Kelowna at 73 and Summerland at 62.

While Penticton’s crime severity did drop by 22 per cent compared to the year before, the crime levels stand out enough to put the city in the top ten for the province's municipalities.

City council hosts a special meeting on Thursday to discuss police staffing in the city, with the possibility of adding five more officers.

So Castanet hit the streets to find out how safe people feel and if more RCMP officers are needed.

Penticton RCMP continue to have one of the highest caseloads per officer in the province.
