Summerland Mayor voted down in bid to serve on Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen board

Mayor denied spot on board

Summerland Mayor Toni Boot will not be back at the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen board table this year.

At Tuesday's council meeting, her bid to be named one of two district representatives at the RDOS was voted down.

Boot served on the board early in her tenure as mayor, but had to step down when she ran for MLA in the 2020 election. She was defeated by incumbent MLA Dan Ashton, and resumed her role as mayor.

Her spot with the RDOS, however, had been given to Coun. Erin Trainer.

Boot argued at Tuesday's meeting that as mayor, she should have a voice at the regional district.

She put her name forward for a vote against Trainer and Coun. Doug Holmes, who has served for three years.

Both Trainer and Holmes expressed interest in carrying forward.

"I really enjoyed the year that I have been on and I've learned a lot. I think having that year behind me would serve me well for another year," Trainer said.

The motion to keep Trainer and Holmes as delegates carried 6-1, with Boot opposed.

Municipalities that are members of the RDOS elect members of their local councils to serve on the RDOS board yearly.
