Summerland urged to prep for community-wide power outages

Prep for community outage

The District of Summerland is reminding residents that two planned community-wide power outages are coming up, and everyone should be prepared.

From 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 15 and 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, the entire grid will be down as FortisBC upgrades the transmission system that provides power to the community.

“As the only electrical feed to our community, maintenance of this transmission line is very important," said the District’s director of utilities.

Power outages will cause interruptions to some water services and streetlights during this time.

The District says these planned outages are a good reminder to Summerlanders to increase their preparedness for such incidents, should they come unexpectedly as the result of storms, animals or motor vehicle accidents.

They say residents should be prepared to cope on their own during a power outage for at least three days, and suggest getprepared.gc.ca as a good source of information.
