Experimental non-alcoholic brew comes to Firehall Brewery

Brewing up experiment

Firehall Brewery in Oliver is releasing a new experimental non-alcoholic beer in collaboration with a laboratory in Ontario, part of ongoing research into brews that taste great without the alcohol.

The innovative new technique involves a maltose-negative strain of yeast developed by Escarpment Laboratories, which ferments only a portion of the sugars during the brewing process.

That allows the essential beer flavour profile to flourish, without exceeding 0.5 per cent alcohol content.

The non-alcoholic beer market is growing, and it is usually unavailable to small craft breweries. This new technology may help local businesses like Firehall brew those beers.

Firehall's brew is called "Fire Drill N.A.I.P.A.," short for Non-Alcoholic India Pale Ale. They describe it as refreshing and hoppy with strong aromas of citrus fruit and evergreen.

The batch will be available on tap and by the bottle to go at Firehall. Volume is limited so will be sold on a first come, first serve basis.
