Penticton food drive smashes one-night goal, and there are still ways to help

Food drive smashes goal

10,000? Try more than 13,000!

The annual 10,000 Tonight food drive run by students from Penticton secondary schools smashed its goal of 10,000 non-perishable food items, collecting close to 14,000 thanks to generous donors around the city.

"We want to thank everyone who donated, as well as out sponsors and volunteers! It is so wonderful to be a part of such a caring community," they wrote on Facebook late Thursday night.

All of the items will be going to families in need.

But the giving season isn't over. 10,000 Tonight is just part one of two events that make up "Penticton Provides."

Part two is Toys for Tots to Teens, looking to raise $20,000 and collect $1,000 gifts for kids aged 0-18 to make sure no child goes without something under the tree this holiday season.

That event takes place Dec. 9 at Penticton Secondary School. Drop off a new, unwrapped toy or a cash donation starting at 7 a.m. and you'll be given a free breakfast as a thanks for participating, while supplies last.

If you can't make the drop-off day, call one of the Castanet team members to arrange a stocking to be dropped off at your business that can be filled with whatever donations you would like to give.

Call 250-460-0121 to schedule Jasmine, Elin or Andrea to come by.
