Star's Piggly Wigglys Sanctuary opens their new home in Summerland

Pig sanctuary can't stop

Casey Richardson

A local woman with a big love for animals has expanded her sanctuary again, moving from Peachland to Summerland with her 34 pigs, five chickens, two ducks and two roosters.

The non-profit foundation, Star's Piggly Wigglys Sanctuary, all began with one sick pig who needed a lot of care.

In September 2012, Faith Affleck took home Star, a four and half-month-old piglet.

“Then at the end of November, she started getting sick, she couldn't go to the bathroom,” Affleck said.

Unfortunately, a medical solution for Star wasn’t possible and she passed away. From then on, Affleck knew she wanted to continue looking after animals in need.

Soon she saved one pig, and then another and another.

“Then within a year, I ended up getting 10 pigs. And then I moved to Peachland last year, got 10 more. And now I'm here and I have 34.”

“I just love animals and being vegan helps a lot more because I don't eat them as it is.”

Their goal is to raise awareness about what it takes to own a pet pig and help raise funds for the sanctuary.

Affleck has now settled her sanctuary in Garnet Valley, spending the last couple of months building and setting up the pig pens.

This weekend the community is invited to drop by for the sanctuary’s first open house to meet all their new neighbours.

“Come and meet everybody, see all the pigs and say hi to them, meet the chickens and the roosters and the ducks.”

Sanctuary merch will be for sale, along with a flea market area and a silent auction. There are goodie bags for the kids and admission is by donation.

The sanctuary is always in need of donations.

The open house runs Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 16808 Garnet Valley Road.
