Book club's love of reading turns into Penticton City Hall's first little library

4 women create a library

Four former educators in the Penticton school district celebrated the grand opening of a new little free library located in City Hall Park on Wednesday.

The women who were the brains behind the project are all in the Beyond Words book club and have a love of reading.

"We decided that we'd like to share our love of books with others. We know how important literacy is for children and also for adults," said Viv Lieskovsky, one of the members.

The group approached city council to see if there was a way they could have a little library on public land.

"We've seen so many of them on private properties, but they really only serve the needs of the neighbours in the area," Lieskovsky said.

"We thought it'd be kind of fun to have something in a high profile location in this city that we could refill regularly with children and adults books. Make it available to people that live here as well as for tourists who are visiting."

Both local high schools participated in getting the library together, with Maggie students constructing the building and Pen High leadership kids collecting books.

A plaque on the lending library states that it was built to represent the apple-growing industry of Penticton in the early 20th century, representing the vibrant history and packing houses that were also in and around the city.
