Attempted carjacker foiled by police dog in Penticton

Carjacker caught by dog

An attempted carjacking at a Penticton car wash Tuesday prompted fast response from local RCMP, and a local man is now in custody.

On Nov. 22 at 11:30 a.m., police responded to the Super Wash on Main Street, after a woman washing her SUV saw a man get into her vehicle and attempt to start it.

The woman confronted the man, who then assaulted her by pushing her and hitting her on the head, before fleeing the scene on foot down a nearby alley.

Cops flooded the area, and brought a police dog that obtained a tracking scent and found the man.

The man, aged 44, was arrested and faces charges of assault and attempted robbery. He was placed on conditions and will be in court on January 25, 2023.

“This incident could have turned out much worse," said Sgt Jason Bayda, spokesperson for the Penticton South Okanagan RCMP.

“Fortunately the woman did not receive any serious injuries."
