Annual Apex Mountain Winter Classic hockey tournament for kids raises $48K for BC Children's Hospital

Kids raise cash for hospital

Organizers and participants of the 7th Annual Winter Classic hockey tournament at Apex Mountain have something to be proud of after an incredible fundraising weekend.

The tournament, which featured six teams and over 100 hockey players aged nine and ten, raised $48,024.76 for the BC Children's Hospital Foundation.

It was a blue sky day at the outdoor rink, perfect conditions for a great cause.

"All season, the kids, their parents and coaches worked extremely hard together and hustled many fundraising events to come to that outstanding result. This tournament is becoming one of the most sought-after hockey events in the province and we are so proud of it and the whole impact this will have on everyone involved," said Yannick Lescarbeau, tournament organizer.

The Vancouver Spirit team, who won last tournament, were once again the champions. The Hollyburn Huskies won silver, and Juan de Fuca Grizzlies won bronze.

"Best hockey experience ever. My kid finally gets to experience outdoor hockey and winter life like the rest of Canada!" said Ivan Sabo, a parent at the tournament.

The tournament has now donated over $200,000 to charity since its creation.
