Princeton and Keremeos receiving provincial funds to set up flood mitigation plans

Funding for emergencies

A funding announcement from the province earlier this week will help set up flood mitigation plans for Princeton and Keremeos.

New Democrat MLA Roly Russell said in the new release that people in Princeton will benefit from provincial funding to help reduce risks from future disaster-related natural hazards and climate change.

“The past two years have shown exactly why climate adaptation and mitigation is so important,” Russell said. “These much-needed funds will help prepare our communities plan for, and prevent, disasters before they happen.”

Princeton is receiving $300,000 in funding for a Flood Mitigation Plan project and Keremeos will be receiving $198,900 for flood mapping, mitigation plan updates and policy development.

A total of $23 million from the Community Emergency Preparedness Fund (CEPF) has been allocated to support communities' plans and response to climate-related emergencies such as floods and extreme temperatures.

The CEPF is administered through the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) and funds projects that strengthen the resilience of First Nations and local governments in responding to and preparing for natural disasters and climate change.
