Summerland museum shares a look back at love with the first church wedding to have taken place in the district

A look back at love in 1904

The nearing St Valentine's Day had the Summerland Museum & Archives Society share a snapshot of romantic history, with a photograph of the first church wedding to have taken place in Summerland.

The wedding, between Harry Dunsdon and his bride Annie Dunsdon, took place on June 1st, 1904 at Summerland's St. Peter's Anglican Church.

The church was Summerland's first, built-in 1899 on the site of the current Anglican cemetery, and destroyed by fire in 1917.

The couple, who are smartly dressed in wedding attire, came to Canada from England.

Harry had travelled from England to Summerland in 1891 at the age of 17.

"Having established a ranch on Garnett Valley, he went back to England in 1901 and returned to Summerland a year later with his fiance Annie Stevens," the museum wrote.

For more information about the Dunsdon family, and other Summerland families, take a look through the museum's digitalized research binders online here.

The Summerland Museum & Archives Society shares photos and information from their archives every week for throwback Thursday on their social media, which can be found online here.
