Crime spree ends in arrest

A man alleged to have gone on a crime spree in the North Okanagan and Shuswap regions was nabbed by RCMP last week.

Richard Robert Taylor, 28, had recently been released on parole in the Lower Mainland.

He is alleged to have fled from police and damaged a police car in Salmon Arm on July 25th, according to Cpl. Dan Moskaluk, RCMP spokesperson.

“A Salmon Arm RCMP officer attempted to stop a vehicle on Highway 1 in Salmon Arm when it fled. The officers quickly determined that the vehicle had been reported as stolen in the Falkland area,” said Moskaluk. “Patrols in the area by RCMP Air Services helicopter and ground units failed to locate the vehicle until a member of the public called the vehicle in as being driven erratically in the Fly Hills area. An RCMP member located the vehicle on a dead end road. As that officer attempted to block in the stolen car it fled, colliding with the police cruiser and causing the stolen car to end up in a ditch.”

The driver then fled on foot and could not not be located by a search dog.

An intensive operation involving RCMP crime analysts and police from the North Okanagan and Salmon Arm RCMP detachments focused on locating Taylor, over the course of several weeks.

On Aug. 10, Salmon Arm RCMP responded to a report of a stolen truck in the Tappen area, after a resident had left it unattended and running on his rural property that morning.

An officer was able to locate the truck shortly after in the Sorrento area and recognized the driver as Taylor.

“With the driver unaware that police had spotted the truck, officers set up on the vehicle. Once several units were in place, they observed the suspect park at a commercial outlet and once he exited the truck, RCMP officers arrested Taylor without incident,” said Moskaluk. “The suspect was so oblivious to the officers' presence as he exited the truck, that he apparently shrieked in fright as they stood truckside immediately behind him.”

So far, Taylor has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, resisting arrest and uttering threats.

He remains in custody and his next court is Aug. 30.
