The North Okanagan Shuswap School District's lone trustee is trying to win back the trust of parents following a fraught school year.
In June, the school board was dismissed and replaced by former Surrey school district Supt. Mike McKay.
“You are invited to come share your thoughts, opinions and concerns with official trustee Mike McKay,” states an invitation entitled 'Community Conversations'.
McKay will travel to the four hub communities within District 83 “to discuss and gather input on many aspects of the school district’s ongoing commitment to provide quality educational programming for students.”
While learning is a key issue, the district has confirmed McKay is willing to discuss facility challenges and the status of current school closure motions.
Parents pressed hard and won a delay to recommended school closures, including Armstrong Elementary, that would have affected students this year. However, those closure motions remain on the table.
“Your opinion is important,” says the release. “Your input will help guide the official trustee and district staff during important decision-making for 2016-17 and beyond."
Community consultation dates include:
Saturday, October 29
- Parkview Elementary from 9 a.m. to noon
- Pleasant Valley Secondary Theatre from 1 to 4 p.m.
Saturday, November 26
- Shuswap Middle School from 9 a.m. to noon
- A.L. Fortune Secondary Theatre from 1 to 4 p.m.
