U-turn causes crash

A driver attempting a u-turn on Highway 1 near Salmon Arm Thursday morning ended up causing a crash that sent a semi truck off the road.

Salmon Arm RCMP attended the collision just after 9 a.m. on the 4400 block of Highway 1 between Salmon Arm and Canoe.

“An investigation revealed that a passenger vehicle which had been at the roadside facing west attempted a u-turn across Highway 1 to proceed eastbound,” said Staff Sgt. Scott West, detachment commander. “The passenger vehicle making the u-turn was struck by a westbound semi truck as the maneuver was attempted.”

West said the collision sent both vehicles off the road, with the semi truck travelling into a ditch and over an embankment leaving the driver shaken up but unhurt.

Meanwhile the passenger vehicle flipped into the ditch on to its roof.

“The female driver of the passenger vehicle, (a local resident) was taken to Shuswap Lakes General Hospital by ambulance with non life threatening injuries,” West said.

The collision and clean up closed the highway for a short time in both directions but it has reopened.

Crews will be working to remove the semi truck during the day and police advise motorists to use caution in the area and slow down for towing contractors.
