Waste... of time?

It appears to be easier to dump rotting banana peels in the garbage rather than recycle them.

Staff at the Columbia Shuswap Regional District have decided not to continue with a program that allowed people to separate food waste and dispose of it at transfer stations.

The 30-week trial was funded by the district, with the bins collected on a weekly basis and hauled to Spa Hills Farm near Salmon Arm for composting.

Only 98 people took part in the program, diverting 2,050 kilograms of waste.

“The 30 week trial program cost in excess of $25,000. Based on the amount of food waste collected, the cost is over $12,000 per metric tonne to divert the food waste collected through a rural depot drop off scheme,” said a report on the program. "A continuation of food waste collection at transfer stations is not warranted."

Staff recommend food waste collection be limited to curbside program development.

They are hoping to achieve a ban on food waste disposal throughout the entire CSRD by the year 2020.
